WOMEN'S HANDBOOK ON ITS WAY OUT

During its six year existence, Cleveland Women's Counsel has developed a comprehensive file of agencies and individuals offering services to women as well as information about how to use these services in self-empowering ways. These files include areas of concern to women such as Health, Housing, Divorce, Childcare, Mental Health and many others. For some time Cleveland feminists have wanted to make the information compiled by CWC, Rape Crisis Center, Women Together, and WomenSpace available to all women in Cleveland in the form of a directory and consumer guidebook. This dream is now a reality due to the efforts of Pat Hoornstra and Judy Gordon (who wrote the funding proposal) and representatives from the four sponsoring organizations mentioned above. The project has been funded by the Gund and Shubert foundations. The budget Includes money for the salaries of two researcher-editors, one office assistant, as well as printing and distributing expenses. The handbook board which consists of representatives from CWC, RCC, Women Together and WomenSpace, will contribute material as well as editorial input at weekly board meetings. The staff and board will collect and write fresh information as well as pull together already existing material,

The handbook will be available in Fall '77 and is intended for use by all women In the Greater Cleveland Area. Essentially, the handbook will be a guide to Cleveland area resources for women, with information about how to choose, evaluate and use them effectively.

The handbook will be distributed at Community Centers, Libraries, YWCA's, Women's Service Agencies, Hospitals as well as at com. mercial outlets. AGENCIES WISHING TO DISTRIBUTE THE HANDBOOK SHOULD CALL 791-2948.

The staff and board of the handbook hope to devise a way to publish updates regularly and to make the handbook project an ongoing and self-supporting one.

Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul and San Francisco are among cities known to have published directories for women so there are some precedents. The staff and the board of the Cleveland Women's Handbook hope to produce something specifically useful to women in the Cleveland Area, keeping in mind the commonality of all women's experience.

In order to make the project an all-Clevelandwoman-made product and to encourage area women artists to take themselves seriously, the

handbook will include graphics and creative writing as well as accounts of personal experiences.

Other areas covered will be Aging, Violence Against Women, Sexuality, Employment, Money and Mothering. The bulk of the handbook will be brief agency and service descriptions and narrative material.

LOCAL WOMEN TO BE PUBLISHED

"

The handbook staff and board want very much to reach feminists as well as women outside

the feminist community. Feeling that the handbook should be a practical guide as well as an educational tool, they want it to reach and be used by the women who need it the most.
